Jon Bernthal showed off a new side of himself when the teaser trailer for Showtime’s upcoming American Gigolo series was released on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old King Richard actor stars as a male Esenyurt Escort just emerging from prison after being incarcerated for 15 years for a wrongful murder conviction.

The series is a remake of the 1980 classic of the same name, which stars Richard Gere in the lead role and was directed by Taxi Driver scribe Paul Schrader.

Bernthal is seen in the teaser just as his character Julian Kaye is trying to restart his life on the outside.

He meets up with Michelle (Gretchen Mol), who is described as his ‘one true love’ in the show’s synopsis.

‘Is this who you are when you’re working?’ she asks him as she lies on her back — fully clothed — while a shirtless Julian leans over and caresses her face.

A quick montage illustrates his working life, as he’s seen escorting beautiful women out of sports cars and stripping down to reveal his ripped abs.

‘I can always just be this other guy,’ he replies in voiceover as he’s seen whispering into a woman’s ear at a bar.

‘This other guy who isn’t scared,’ he continues as the trailer takes a dark turn.

Julian is then seen in flashback as he tries to resuscitate a woman in bed who is covered in blood.

It’s unclear if he has walked in on her dead body, or if he woke up next to the slain woman, but the police arrive at the worst possible time as he tries to flee the scene.

‘I jump in the water and I wash him off,’ he says of his other life. ‘Then I get to be me.’

A final quick montage highlights the contradictions in Julian’s post prison life, as he tries to renew his relationship with Michelle in a stylish red-bathed scene, which is juxtaposed against another run-in with the law.

Julia throws his hands in the air as police officers jump out of their vehicles with their guns pointed at him.

Leland Orser, who plays a tech billionaire, is also briefly seen.

Another scene with Mol shows her frantically trying to drive Julian away.

‘You can’t let him see you — he’ll just do it again!’ she shouts at the gigolo.

Meanwhile, Rosie O’Donnell briefly pops up on screen as Detective Sunday, who helped put Julian away and is still looking into the true origins of the crime he went to prison for.

‘It’s hard to believe it’s been more than 40 years since the film release of American Gigolo and now we have the chance to continue the story of American Gigolo as a TV series,’ Executive Producer Jerry Bruckheimer — who produced the original film — told  on Tuesday. ‘Expect heightened mystery, danger, and desires as Jon Bernthal takes the movie’s iconic character on a contemporary, exhilarating journey.’

The show’s cast also includes Lizzie Brocheré as Isabelle, who inherited a sex workers organization, and Wayne Brady, who guest stars as Julian’s best friend Lorenzo.

Gabriel LaBelle is featured in flashback scenes as a younger version of Julian, back when he was known as Johnny.

So far, a release date hasn’t been set for American Gigolo.
