It is difficult to identify just how much cash is typically required by ransomware aggressors because there is no set price. The amount of cash demanded can vary depending upon the kind of ransomware utilized, the amount of data secured, the kind of information secured, and the attacker’s desire to work out. We can look at some real-world examples to get a sense of how much cash assailants typically demand.
In April of 2016, the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center was struck with most common ransomware (see this here) that secured their information. The assaulters required 9,000 bitcoins, which is comparable to about $3.6 million. The hospital ended up paying the ransom and regaining access to their data.
In February of 2017, the San Francisco Municipal Transport Agency (SFMTA) was hit with ransomware that locked down some of their computer systems. The aggressors demanded 100 bitcoins, which is comparable to about $70,000. The SFMTA did not pay the ransom and rather restored their systems from backups.
These examples reveal that the quantity of money required by ransomware assailants can differ greatly. It really depends on the scenario and the assaulter’s motivation.
