Back down to its lowest price ever — and the same deal seen last year — you’ll want to grab one before it likely sells out during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  Following a buy one get one free promotion, which has since ended, the retailer has slashed the price of the smart speaker from £39.99 to £18.99.

In the Frames, Amazon’s smart assistant really isn’t much better than Siri.  After becoming a mainstay in millions of households, Alexa truly moves outside the house with the Frames. But this is nothing like Jarvis in the Iron Man movies. The big appeal of the Echo Frames, of course, isn’t the style but the technology.

As with Google’s new speaker, a pair of Echoes can be set up to work in stereo format. Unlike the Nest Audio, the Echo has a 3mm line in/out port for connecting to other speakers. The effect is great, Classical Books particularly with songs that take full advantage of stereo panning or asymmetric sound, such as The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army or Pink Floyd’s Money.

With over 65,000 perfect five-star ratings, the Echo Show 8 (1st Gen, 2019 release) is one of the retailer’s most versatile Echo devices; it can display recipes, give you weather, traffic updates and more.

Get instant notifications via your smartphone when visitors press your doorbell or trigger the built-in motion sensors and connect to a real-time live view. Plus, the two-way microphone and speaker allows you to speak with whoever is on your doorstep.

And at least in design, it did: the Alexa countertop device is shaped like a sphere, a striking departure from the soft-cylindrical speakers of past generations. Six years after the first Echo launched 10,000 (or at least a few dozen) smart speakers, a reimagined design was overdue. In a year both Google and Apple launched new $100 smart speakers, Amazon had to make its fourth-gen Echo smart speaker stand out.

Shoppers have called the strappy, button-down dress ‘comfortable, flattering and good value,’ thanks to its soft material, convenient pockets, and A-line fit — not to mention its incredibly low price tag of £19.99.

If you have fast Wi-Fi, then it seems this setup would work well. I used a 4K Fire TV Stick to create the group, and it felt great to be able to simply say, «Watch The Boys,» to Alexa, only to have your TV turn on and begin streaming the Prime show. The speakers worked fairly well, though I had one drop out of the group while I was testing it. In a house with multiple people streaming or using bandwidth in other ways, although relying on your Echoes for stereo sound might lead to more frustration than it’s worth.

There’s also elasticated smocking at the back, so it’s comfortable to wear, and the gathered seam at the waist creates a flattering silhouette — perfect if you want to draw attention away from your hips and thighs.

Amazon’s Echo Frames drew plenty of attention when they were announced last year among the company’s Alexa-powered blitz of new products. They also lack cameras, outward-facing lights or a heads-up display.  Unlike Google’s ill-fated Glass or Snapchat’s Spectacles, Amazon’s $250 specs (discounted to $180 as part of its invite-only Day One edition prelaunch) look largely like regular glasses.

I could never get the glasses completely closed because the arms were so bulky, and it ended up looking awkward and unbalanced. The plastic feels cheap and fragile. But while the frames look relatively nice, for $180 (or the $250 regular price after the invitation window has closed), Amazon needs to put more focus on the build quality.

Amazon touts the Echo Frames as having «open-ear technology,» which is marketing speak for having little downward-facing speakers next to your ears, as opposed to buds inside them.  Overall, the Frames’ audio is middling, and if you’re looking to use these as headphone replacements, it’s best to look elsewhere.

Both Amazon’s and Google’s smart speakers offer great sound quality for the $100 price tag, but after side-by-side testing with dozens of songs, the Echo takes the prize by a small but significant margin. Otherwise, they’re fairly comparable, with the Nest boasting a slight edge when it comes to some acoustic and Classical Books music. It’s more powerful, and if you like hip-hop or trap music, the Echo will treat you well.
