The top spots to camp in Big Sur. Here are some tips from locals to aid you in planning your trip.
We have been camping in Big Sur a handful of times and it’s one of our top spots to camp. The coastline here is absolutely stunning and it is where you can find some stunning camping spots. We prefer not to be a part of crowds in summer, we typically visit the region in the spring or fall. This season is perfect for beautiful sunsets, uncrowded hikes , and warm temperatures in the daytime. Even at night it could be slightly cooler. Big Sur is an excellent camping spot throughout the time of the year. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is not to be confused with Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park that has only two campsites, yet is situated on the bluff directly above McWay Falls. There are numerous hiking trails that are available within and around Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park including Pheiffer Falls, a hike through massive redwoods that leads to a 60-foot waterfall. Camping fees at Pfeiffer Big Sur are $35-$50 per night. I did not include Julia Pfeiffer Burns merely because it’s extremely tough to get a reservation at one of the two locations, so your best bet is to choose Pfeiffer Big Sur if you wish to be close to McWay Falls. McWay Falls is only an hour’s drive from the campground. Kirk Creek will remain one of Big Sur’s most popular campgrounds. It sits right on top of the bluff and overlooks the ocean. We happened to arrive just as another camping party was packing up, and got their spot right on the edge of the cliff. The majority of sites are reserved, and the other half are first-come first-served. Be prepared for little to no shade in this camping site. A pop-up canopy is a great idea. Camping fees are $35 per night. The group we were with camped at Fernwood Resort among the redwood trees. Fernwood Resort (and other campgrounds with redwood) is more frigid in winter than campgrounds with full sun. This is my one and only complaint. The plus to Fernwood is the general store and restaurant for those days when you’re not feeling like cooking or if you forgot certain items. Fernwood Resort offers tent sites starting at $65 for a night. Andrew Molera’s campsites can only be reached via hiking, and therefore it’s not the best spot for car camping. That being said, if you’ve got the equipment you need, it’s well worth the short walk to get there. They provide a picnic table, barbecue grill, fire pit and food storage bins at each campsite. There are also restrooms and garbage bins near the camping areas, so you are not completely roughing it. To locate the park follow the mile markers 51.2 on Highway 1, about 21 miles to the south of Carmel. The campsites are all first-come, and first-served. Limekiln State Park is situated in the redwoods about 56 miles south of Carmel, and it offers 29 camping spots along the creek along the beachfront and within the forest. The park was once the site of a limekiln production facility and just a short walk from your camping spot it is possible to explore the ruin of the limekiln, addition to hiking trails to the beach and Limekiln Falls. Every campsite is equipped with a fire ring and a picnic table. Camping sites can be reserved for up to 6 months in advance. The cost is $35 for a night. Plaskett Creek campground is located directly across from Sand Dollar beach. It is shaded, has flush toilets and running water. There are 44 camping sites nestled in the midst of large Monterey Pines and the campground is within walking distance of the Willet hike trail. Each site is equipped with camping fire rings and a picnic table. The campground isn’t equipped with hook-ups. For campervans , travel trailers, or campervans camping, the majority of campsites are simple to navigate. Camping fees are 35 dollars per night. We’re big on packing light when camping and have created a fantastic kit that is exactly what we used when camping in Big Sur. Andrew Molera State Park is hike-in only and you’ll need to restrict what you take to the park. Portable Charger: We have this portable charger to charge our phones. We suggest you go to Point Lobos State Reserve in Carmel if you are ever within Big Sur.
