Bavaria is a place of fantastic ales and hearty cuisine according to Kiwi ex-pat Nicholas Halsall. Why did you choose to relocate to Germany? Initially I relocated to Munich due to the sports company I was working for at the time and web treasure Hunter I’m now in Germany with my wife and son. We were back in New Zealand on holiday in Christchurch visiting family and friends when the earthquake of February 2011 hit. We needed to alter our plans and ended up staying in Germany. It made our decision easier to leave an apartment in the city and move to a gorgeous Bavarian village called Andechs which is about 40 minutes from central Munich and a much better place to bring up our son. What do you do there? I currently work as a sales and marketing manager Europe as well as Middle East for Contiki, the youth travel company. What do you enjoy or dislike about living there? As Contiki was created in Europe by an NZer I am lucky to be doing what I do and in the places I do it. Oktoberfest is always great fun and I love attending the summer celebrations and events. In winter, it can be 6 to 7 months of winter snow. This is something I don’t like. What do you think New Zealand compare in terms of cost of living? It’s pretty good. Germany is blessed with a great health system. The majority of people have enough money to purchase food and drink, even if they are living on welfare. In cities like Munich tends to be higher but it’s more of an European trend. Gas, electricity, and gasoline are all affordable. What can you do on weekends? Andechs is situated in Funfseenland in the Five Lakes District. You can see that there are five lakes close by and swimming in the summer is a high priority. It’s also on a hill , and is covered in forest, which is why I love going out and running, in snow or sun. Also, I have to mowing the lawn and it is a lengthy process. What do you think of the food? Bavaria is famous for its potato and pork variations. It’s impossible to go wrong with an enormous pork knuckle or potato salad (schweinshaxe or the kartoffelsalat). When there’s sunshine and even when there isn’t I will try to barbecue. What is the best way to get around? Munich and Bavaria are simple and easy to move around. Underground trains and overland trains are frequently available and operate according to schedule. The Munich center is small and is easy to stroll around. How do you feel about shopping? Munich shopping is awe-inspiring. Munich is a popular destination for tourists who love to shop. What is the nightlife in Munich like? The nightlife in Munich is diverse. There are the traditional beer halls, which are enjoyable and must-sees. In addition, there’s KultFabrik the world’s largest nightclub and entertainment zone after the bars close. Which is your favorite part of Munich? It is definitely where I reside in Andechs. All the advantages of living in a village are readily available in Andechs, and yet we are 40 minutes from Munich’s 1.2 million people. What time of season is the most enjoyable? Munich is definitely a tourist destination of two seasons. The Christmas season is filled with markets, drinks like mulled wine (gluhwein) and skiing while summer has the beer gardens and grills. In summer, every town and village has its own festival (volksfest). My personal preference is that July-September are the ideal time to visit, simply for the summer time lifestyle. What are your top things to do to do for guests? Munich, Bavaria and Germany are known for their beers and beer gardens. It’s impossible not to enjoy having a delicious drink, enjoying delicious food in a stunning setting, and experiencing the «gemutlichkeit» which is a term that refers to the unique characteristics to German culture and Germans. What are your top tips for visitors? One of my favorite days in my calendar is the day I go for the Flossfahrt. At the time that Munich was being built they employed huge wooden rafts in the Isar River to carry everything needed to finish the job and supply the population. When the trip , the rafts would be then taken apart and the lumber was used for the construction of the city. Today we continue our classic route of the river, starting from Wolfratshausen to Munich. There are 50 people aboard the raft in addition to food, beer, and a band of four. The trip lasts about eight hours. It’s great fun and the raft still is dismantled at the end , and the timber is utilized to build Munich! Andechs is well-known for its Benedictine Monastery, which houses Christ-relics. Andechs is the only one that makes use of German Purity Laws to brew beer (called Reinheitsgebot), is famous for its beer as well as the breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside as well as the Austrian Alps. Is it simple to return to New Zealand? This isn’t a problem because there are many flight options.
