Watching seeds germinate is a great activity for kids particularly when the seeds are sprouting quickly. Alfalfa is one of the easiest seeds to grow and should grow within one week. To see the seeds germinate by sprinkling a few alfalfa seeds over a piece of damp paper towel.
You will require:
A small packet of Alfalfa seeds (about 1.5g).
A small dish or saucer
3 pieces of paper towel
A spray mister or small water container
How to Grow:
Get 3 pieces of paper towel, then place them on top of each other flat on a platter.
Drain the water from the plate. The paper towel should be moist, but the seeds should not be floating in water.
Place the seeds in a uniform manner on the towel.
To stop the paper towel from drying out, put it on a sunny windowill with water. To moisten seeds, utilize a spray bottle or mister to do so. Or, gently add water into the saucer using a cup or small jug.
Make sure to check your seeds each day to see how they’re developing.
Troubleshooting
Alfalfa is a simple to grow seed that should be able to germinate in between 2 and 6 days. Here are some things to be aware of if your seeds don’t germinate in this time.
Too dry. Seeds require water to develop. Alfalfa seeds suck up about own weight of water before they germinate, and look swollen. If your seeds are dry, they won’t germinate. To ensure the seeds don’t get sucked up in water, add more water to the plate. It is also possible to soak your seeds overnight; just make sure you drain them and wash them in fresh water before spreading them onto the towel.
Too wet:If the seeds are moist, their new roots and shoots may rot before they get a chance to grow. There is also a chance that mould could begin to develop on the seeds. It’s okay for the paper towel to be wet but the seeds should not be floating in water. Drain excess water from the dish each when you water or mist the seeds.
