Argonauts and hobbits Argonauts and Emperors

On this threshold of eminence too, one key member was gaoled for fifteen months, and two others quit, one of them fated to co-produce Hilda Baker and Arthur Ballard’s chartbusting duet of “You’re The One That I Want”. Join us as we welcome internationally renowned disabled artist Jason Wilsher-Mills to talk about his exhibition, Jason and the Argonauts on Tour. Born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, Jason Wilsher-Mills describes his work as ‘The Beano’ meets ‘I, Daniel Blake’. He uses humour, images from popular culture, childhood memories and a commitment to disability activism to create distinctive and vibrant works influenced by his ‘psychedelic 1970s working-class upbringing’.

This year’s Lower School production followed the quest of Jason with his ensemble of the mightiest heroes in Greek Mythology. He started out using oils, but later switched to making art with computers and tablets. Because he’s a superstar who adapted to challenges and embraced new ways to create after becoming disabled. Discover the psychedelic work of internationally acclaimed disabled artist Jason Wilsher-Mills in this thought provoking and fun exhibition.

Here was a mesmerising display of the chorus members switching seamlessly between roles, with George taking centre stage as the brave ‘hero’, yet it was Medea’s effortless power that Lila made sure presided onstage. Still, Jason grabbed the glory of the Golden Fleece as Lila’s Medea watched with a glorious look of mock pity. We know the story of Jason, but not exactly when it was first told.

An oracle foretold that Aietes would lose his kingdom if he lost the fleece, and it was from Aietes that Jason had to retrieve it. Here people still pan for gold using the fleece of a sheep © According to the legend, Jason was deprived of his expectation of the throne of Iolkos (a real kingdom situated in the locale of present day Volos) by his uncle, King Pelias, who usurped the throne. Jason was taken from his parents, and was brought up on Mount Pelion, in Thessaly, by a centaur named Cheiron. Meantime his uncle lived in dread of an oracle’s prophecy, which said he should fear the ‘man with one shoe’.

Argonauts

For fate had ordained that he and Mopsus, skilled in the seer’s art, should wander and perish in the furthest ends of Libya. For no ill is too remote for mortals to incur, seeing that they buried them in Libya, as far from the Colchians as is the space that is seen between the setting and the rising of the sun. In the end, Jason becomes a wanderer once more, and eventually returns to beached hull of the Argo. Here the beam of the ship (which was said to speak and was named Dodona) falls on him and kills him.

This 45 was also a prelude to a voyage to a lower circle of hell for me and an Argonauts in gradually more constant flux. Nevertheless, there was always sufficient to feed hope, and I’d been famous enough to want to battle hard against being consigned back to the oblivion from whence I’d come. Coupled with “Landwaster”, an excerpt from a then-unreleased in-concert LP,it was a “turntable hit” (e.g. Number Three in Time Out, the London events guide’s chart). Moreover, so I understood later, “Landwaster” entered Belgium’s Top Twenty fleetingly after a pirate radio presenter began spinning it by mistake instead of the A-side. Soon, we were past resistance to the circumstances that had made it impossible to go back then to anyone’s old routine of get up-get to work-get home-get to bed groundhog days that once passed for a life.

He was the son of Clytonaeus son of Naubolus; Naubolus was son of Lernus; Lernus we know was the son of Proetus son of Nauplius; and once Amymone daughter of Danaus, wedded to Poseidon, bare Nauplius, who surpassed all men in naval skill. Moreover Actor sent his son Menoetius from Opus that he might accompany the chiefs. There came too Titaresian Mopsus, whom above all men the son of Leto taught the augury of birds; and Eurydamas the son of Ctimenus; he dwelt at Dolopian Ctimene near the Xynian lake. From rich Gyrton came Coronus, son of Caeneus, brave, but not braver than his father. This page is best viewed in an up-to-date web browser with style sheets (CSS) enabled. The giant inflatables are a little noisy due to the fan feeding them with air. There are lots of hands on activities in the Argonauts gallery so there are plenty of opportunities to relax and be creative. Finally if you prefer a relaxed time away from the crowds please check out the holiday activity programme for our scheduled relaxed hours or contact us in advance to ask if there are quieter times. In Greek mythology, the Argonauts were a band of heroes who, in the years before the Trojan War, accompanied Jason to Colchis in his quest for the Golden Fleece. They sailed the ship the Argo – hence their name, which literally means «Sailors of the Argo».
