Marnus Labuschagne’s batting coach Neil D’Costa has lashed out at Mark Waugh for caring more about gambling on horse racing than his cricket commentary after recent criticism of the star batsman.
The world’s No.1-ranked Test batsman has copped criticism from Fox Sports’ commentator and cricket great Mark Waugh for the amount of times he’s been dropped during his career.

Fox even went as far as putting a stats sheet together that revealed what Labuschagne’s career average would be if those chances had been taken.
Labuschagne’s coach Neil D’Costa thinks the criticism is disrespectful and has hit out at Waugh for his obsession with horse racing.
‘I’ve heard about this line of commentary,’ D’Costa told the .
‘There are many more nuances in the game that need discussion and that I’d like to discuss.
‘Nowadays, I know that Mark Waugh’s real business is his horse racing — I often wonder how much luck is invoked in that sport?

‘They really must not have anything else to discuss. Look, Marnus doesn’t drop the catches — it’s not his fault — but to focus on that really takes away from the hard work he has done to get to where he is.
‘He is as dedicated as anyone in the game and should be recognised for that, not as a fluke. It’s boring and disrespectful to focus on this.
‘I mean, in the history of the game, how many centuries are without chance, and I’m sure a few bowlers from a few years back would like DRS on Mark Waugh.
D’Costa said that Mark Waugh’s real business is his horse racing, not cricket — in remarks that could have been prompted by a recent video of the champion batter paying close attention to his form guide while commentating (pictured)
‘These comments and the repetition of them has a real personal tone. I don’t think this will impact Marnus because he is not sitting there watching the commentary, and it won’t impact me any more.
‘I have options — I can hit the mute button and listen to the radio, and I advise others to do the same.’
Waugh is married to NSW thoroughbred trainer Kim Waugh and has gone on the record as saying that ‘cricket often got in the way of my interest in horse racing’.
A recent video of Waugh watching horse racing on his phone while doing cricket commentary has also done the rounds on social media and could be what prompted D’Costa’s remarks.

Cricket fans have had mixed responses to the clip, but many think it is unprofessional of a commentator.
‘Turns out Mark and I have one thing in common, we both bludge off at work by watching sports unrelated to our job,’ said one Reddit user.
‘The perfect way to watch test cricket,’ said another.
‘About the level of professionalism I’d expect from him unfortunately,’ commented a third.
