If Manchester United manager David Moyes feels he has had a rough ride so far this season, there is a bloke managing just 16 miles away who has been having it somewhat harder.
Hyde FC’s 2-0 victory at Welling in the Skrill Premier — the first league beneath League Two Best Premium Accounts Sell — AccountsSelling.Com on Tuesday night was the first time manager Scott McNiven had seen his team win in an astonishing 29 league games.
Not since April last year had Hyde won a game in the division and another failure on Tuesday would have seen the tiny north-west club equal AFC Telford’s Conference Premier record of 30 league matches without a win.
Relief: Hyde manager Scott McNiven got to celebrate victory for the first time in 29 matches after his side beat Welling in the Conference Premier
Not surprisingly, McNiven was a little relieved on Wednesday, saying: ‘It feels great and it’s nice that the players have got a reward for all the hard work they’ve put in this season.
‘Despite all that has happened, the changing room is always good and the training has always been good. Obviously confidence has taken a hit, as you would expect with any bad run.
‘My dog can usually reads my body language. When I’ve been coming in for the last six months, she’s been hiding under the sofa.
‘Last night, she came and gave me a kiss.’
Rough ride: Manchester United manager David Moyes’ reign has been far from plain sailing but McNiven, who manages just 16 miles away, has had a harder time
Having not won in the league since a 1-0 home win over Ebbsfleet last season, Hyde’s struggles as one of the smallest teams in their division — their players are only semi-professional for example — have slowly brought them some publicity this season.
Recently, for example, Sky’s Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling has been charting their progress and even wore a Hyde scarf on air on Saturday as McNiven’s team led at Southport only to concede a late goal and draw 1-1.
‘We’ve had some close calls this year,’ McNiven, 35, added.
‘There have been games where we have come off scratching our heads thinking: «How have we lost that?»

‘For example, we’ve scored in the last minute and then the other team have gone up the other end and scored. You can never say never with us, unfortunately.
‘But I’m just delighted about this now.’
Bottom of the league with just seven points from 28 games, Hyde — who share their Ewen Fields ground with Manchester City’s second string side — are certain to be relegated at the end of the season.
Saturday, meanwhile, presents another challenge, a game against Forest Green who beat them 8-0 on the opening game of the season.
Whatever happens between now and the season’s end, though, Hyde can perhaps take solace from the fact there is one team not so far away that is even worse off.
Neighbours Droylsden currently sit bottom of the Evo-Stick Northern Premier with just two points from 29 games and a goal difference of minus 96.
